What happens at a wound care center

This article is part of the Complete Guide to Wound Care.

If you’re scheduling an appointment at a wound care center, chances are you’re suffering from a wound that just won’t heal. And you’re not alone. It is estimated that more than 6.7 million people currently live with chronic and/or non-healing wounds. The best form of protection against non-healing wounds is prevention. But if you’re already suffering from a chronic wound, a wound care center specializes in the care you need.

What to expect

Your healing program at the wound care center will begin with a referral from your primary care physician. Once referred, you will undergo a thorough diagnostic examination to identify your wound, complications from the wound, and any underlying problems causing your wound. Your initial appointment will help determine the classification and size of your wound, your overall health and ability to comply with necessary treatments, and ultimately, a treatment plan.

What to bring to your first appointment

It’s important for the providers at the wound care center to know your medical history prior to starting treatment. Bring a list of medications you’re currently taking, as well as a list of any allergies you’re aware of. This first step can help your wound care provider better understand you, and ultimately, help them come up with a treatment plan best suited for you. Also bring your medical records including X-rays (if you have them). This is especially important if you’re being referred from an outside location. And as usual, bring your ID and insurance cards.

The wound care center team

It can feel a little less overwhelming if you know who to expect to see at the wound care center prior to your first appointment. Every single person you interact with has one goal overall – to help heal your chronic wound. The wound care team consists of:

  • Physicians with advanced training in wound management and hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Nursing staff trained in the care of chronic wounds
  • Technicians who perform non-invasive studies and various therapies
  • Experienced staff to assist with appointments, medical records, and health insurance processing

Available treatments

Once you have been through your diagnostic examination, your wound care provider will put you on a treatment plan that has been customized just for you. Some of the treatment options available at the wound center include:

  • Debridement
  • Topical wound therapy
  • Growth-factor therapy
  • Tissue therapy
  • Dressing selection
  • Special shoes

Each treatment plan, including yours, will include patient education to ensure that healing continues during and after your wound care center visit.
