No one expects to get hurt playing sports, but sometimes student athletes find themselves in need of care after a sports injury. Logansport Memorial’s Sports Medicine program was designed to diagnose and treat these sports injuries, quickly and safely. Our partnership with local schools allows for student athletes to receive streamlined care, on and off the field. And for student athlete Caleb Crook, that direct access to care got him the help he needed for his injury.
The injury
“I had quadricep tendinitis and left patellar chondromalacia which caused pain in my left knee, pain while going up the stairs and jumping, and I had a loss in muscle tone.”
This injury is a condition where the cartilage under the kneecap softens and deteriorates, It’s common among young, athletic individuals. LMH Athletic Trainer Sydney Latham, and both Dr. Varhan and Jamie Ross, NP, worked together to diagnose this injury and work on a treatment plan to get Caleb back in action.
“Sydney monitored my pain and progress and made sure I was iced and receiving after care following each game I played. I was also scheduled to do physical therapy, which I am still working on now.”
The team
One of the goals for the Sports Medicine program is to ease the trouble of finding care quickly. Athletic Trainer Sydney Latham was on-site and able to provide fast care for the injury, but she was also a key component in finding Caleb the additional care he needed.
“I saw Dr. Varhan and Jamie Ross for my injury, outside of the care I was getting from Sydney. They were very nice, supportive, and friendly.”
When asked why he chose Logansport Memorial Hospital for his care, Caleb credited our Sports Medicine program.
“The partnership between the Logansport schools and Logansport Memorial Hospital made choosing the hospital seamless. Sydney was able to set up my appointments and communicate my past care. The doctor’s office was able to access her notes from working with me, and continued with the next steps of care.”
This ease in access of care is what we strive to provide the student athletes of our community.
