Logansport Memorial celebrates National Healthcare Volunteer Week

Logansport Memorial Hospital is fortunate to have nearly 50 volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to help our hospital provide high quality healthcare to our community. During National Healthcare Volunteer Week, recognized from April 19-23 this year, LMH would like to recognize the group of men and women for their commitment to patient care, and their compassion toward our patients, our staff, and our community.

Our volunteers offer skills, talents and compassion that benefit visitors, families, and our staff. At Logansport Memorial, these valued individuals assist with administrative tasks, work in our gift shop, unpack boxes in purchasing, offer a welcoming smile at our entrances or escort patients and families to unfamiliar locations. All Logansport Memorial volunteers are trained and meet all professional regulatory guidelines to assure patient safety and satisfaction.

In 2020, Logansport Memorial volunteers donated over 4,000 hours to our hospital. In a typical year, this tremendous donation of time and service is celebrated at an annual Volunteer Banquet. Our volunteers come together for food and fellowship and hear from Logansport Memorial leadership about how much their contributions mean to our hospital. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions in place, and out of an abundance of caution for the health of our volunteers, the annual Volunteer Banquet has been cancelled this year with high hopes of resuming it safely next year.

To mark the occasion this year, LMH Volunteers still received their choice of a small gift of hand lotion or hand soap, to make sure they knew that “Hands Down, they are the Best Around!”

The Top 10 service awards were given to the ten volunteers who donated the most hours in 2020. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, and with volunteer services temporarily suspended out of concern for their health and safety, our volunteers stepped forward and stepped up when called upon to continue serving our patients and our staff. We thank all of our volunteers for all that they do, and especially recognize these ten volunteers for their hours of service in 2020 (listed in ranking order):

  1. Barb Landis – 452.5 hours
  2. Deb Musall – 367 hours
  3. Bonnie Bowyer – 342 hours
  4. Paul Berk – 276.5 hours
  5. Herb Detrick – 241 hours
  6. Donna Geisler – 234 hours
  7. Ric Donnelly – 160.75 hours
  8. Skip Perry – 153 hours
  9. Tom Heath – 128 hours
  10. Dan Layman – 124.5 hours

Tamara Szarszewski, Gift Shop and Volunteer Services Coordinator commented,

“Our volunteers’ talent is remarkable, and their loyalty is priceless. I am so grateful to work with all of the men and women who willingly give of themselves in service to our hospital and our patients. The next time you are impacted by the service of one of our volunteers, please let them know how much it means to you. They make our hospital and our community a better place, and they truly make a difference every day for all of us at Logansport Memorial Hospital.”

The Logansport Memorial Hospital Volunteers is led by a board of directors, to uphold the group’s mission of “rendering services to Logansport Memorial Hospital and its patients, while assisting with promoting the health and welfare of the community in accordance with objectives established by the institution.”

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or would like to learn more about our volunteer program, please contact Tamara directly at (574) 753-1304, or by email at giftshop@logansportmemorial.org. We are always willing to welcome new faces who want to make a difference in the lives of our patients.
