The Diabetes Education program at Logansport Memorial Hospital was recently named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. This provides residents in and around Logansport and Cass County with increased access to critical diabetes education services.
Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions.
The program at Logansport Memorial Hospital is led by Karen Shidler, RN, BSN, MS. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator and has worked in this role with patients for more than 18 years. Registered Dietitian Norma Fielding is also a Certified Diabetes Educator and involved in the program.
Diabetes Education at Logansport Memorial Hospital, located at 1101 Michigan Avenue in Logansport, offers diabetes education classes on a range of topics throughout the year. Classes include Diabetes Basics, Diabetes Support Group, and Insulin Pumpers Meetings. Every other year, a larger community event focused on Diabetes Education and Awareness is held as well. The dates and times for these classes can be found on the hospital website, by visiting our webpage about Diabetes Education.

Karen noted, “We have been a recognized diabetes education program by the American Diabetes Association since 2001 but felt that AADE’s accreditation had some advantages with the changing healthcare environment and the increasing need for diabetes education.”
“Trends show that diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community, so AADE’s accreditation program was created, in part, to encourage diabetes education where the patient is seeking care,” said Leslie E. Kolb, RN, BSN, MBA, Program Director, Diabetes Education Accreditation Program. “Diabetes Education at Logansport Memorial Hospital is exactly the type of program we envisioned when we set up our accreditation program in 2009.”
