If you’re a current or former smoker—and you’re concerned about your risk of developing lung cancer—Logansport Memorial Hospital now offers a new medical test that you should know about.

Low-Dose CT Lung Scan

Low-dose CT lung screening is a fast and inexpensive test designed to detect cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. With early detection, the survival rate for this disease is considerably higher. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

The low-dose CT lung scan doubles the number of early cancers found. A small investment of time and money can save your life – the procedure is painless, non-invasive, and requires little to no preparation.

Who should be screened for lung cancer?

  • Smokers between the age of 55-77 years old
  • Non-smokers who quit less than 15 years ago
  • Non-smokers who have additional risk factors, such as family history of lung cancer, exposure to a known carcinogen, COPD, emphysema or other cancers

Your doctor may also recommend a screening based on other factors in your specific medical history.

Logansport Memorial Hospital understands that some patients may be concerned about the radiation dose received during such a screening test. That is why we use special dose-reduction processes and technologies to limit radiation exposure during the lung screening. The low-dose CT scan has 3 – 5 times less radiation exposure than a regular CT scan.
